The Ivy is so happy to welcome David Yezzi for a reading and conversation about his new book of poetry, More Things in Heaven. Dave will be in conversation with fellow poet, Elizabeth Spires. This event will be held outdoors, on The Ivy's back patio.
With formal grace and dexterity, David Yezzi's More Things in Heaven draws from his four previous volumes and includes seventeen new poems that explore art and friendship, marriage and family, and a renewal through poetry that his careful craftmanship makes possible. Here you will find compressed lyrics as well as longer, blank-verse narratives reminiscent of Robert Frost or Anthony Hecht. As Yezzi memorializes a host of relations and experience with humor and humanity, we are reminded of Shakespeare not only in the title of this volume, but also in the sheer range of characters - friends, family, poets, fellow citizens - given life in these poems.
David Yezzi’s latest books of poetry are Black Sea (2018) and More Things in Heaven: New and Selected Poems (2022). This past winter he performed the title role in King Lear at the Baltimore Shakespeare Factory. Recently a short-term visiting fellow at Jesus College, Oxford, he teaches in the Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins.
Elizabeth Spires is the author of seven poetry collections, including A MEMORY OF THE FUTURE, and seven books for children. She is a professor at Goucher College.
