To celebrate the centenary of Ulysses, amateur Joycean Bob Cronan will host a complete table reading of the Circe episode with the help of nearly two dozen friends, on the back patio of The Ivy Bookshop!
For those unfamiliar with this play within the novel, it’s emblematic of the many innovations for which James Joyce’s epic is renowned — or in some quarters, reviled. Circe is not for the faint of heart. It’s a bizarre, phantasmagorical theater of the absurd — a veritable acid trip in print! It presaged and inspired future writers from Thornton Wilder to the Beat generation and beyond. We hope you’ll find our presentation an entertaining and meaningful way to honor this one hundred year old book, which continues to confound and delight.
