Prolific poet and writing professor Naomi Shihab Nye was named the Young People's Poet Laureate by the Poetry Foundation in 2019. Born to a Palestinian father and an American mother, she grew up in St. Louis, Missouri; Jerusalem; and San Antonio, Texas. Her writing draws on her Palestinian-American heritage, the cultural diversity of her home in Texas, and her travels in Asia, Europe, Canada, Mexico, and the Middle East to attest to our shared humanity. She is the author of several poetry collections including "Red Suitcase," "Fuel," "You & Yours," and "Famous."

Nye has been a Lannan Fellow, a Guggenheim Fellow, and a Witter Bynner Fellow, a Library of Congress honor. Her accolades include the Paterson Poetry Prize, four Pushcart Prizes, and "The Betty Prize," as well as numerous honors for her children’s literature. Her work has been featured on NPR’s "A Prairie Home Companion" and "The Writer’s Almanac," and on PBS poetry specials including "The Language of Life with Bill Moyers." She has been poetry editor at The Texas Observer for 20 years and teaches poetry and creative writing at Texas State University.
