Carole and Jeffery Boston Weatherford, the award-winning mother-son/author-illustrator team behind You Can Fly: The Tuskegee Airmen, will celebrate heroes, history and hip hop through poetry and spoken word. Baltimore-born, Carole is the author of more than 50 books, including The Roots of Rap and biographies of Marylanders Harriet Tubman, Billie Holiday and Charles Albert Tindley, a gospel composer. In addition to illustrating children's books, Jeffery is a fine artist and performance poet.

Carole Boston Weatherford has written many award-winning books for children, including Caldecott Honor winners Freedom in Congo Square; Voice of Freedom: Fannie Lou Hamer, Spirit of the Civil Rights Movement; and Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom. Jeffery Boston Weatherford created the scratchboard illustrations for You Can Fly using archival World War II photographs as reference. Jeffery studied art at Winston-Salem State University, where he was a Chancellor’s Scholar, and at Howard University, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts.
